The sale of the 1,000,000th vehicle was preceded by a longtime presence of Volkswagen AG in Russia. The prospects of the Russian market were clear for the German corporate group for a long time as Volkswagen Group Rus was among the first foreign automotive importing companies in Russia, starting its vehicle imports in 2003 along with taking logistic liabilities.
As the number of vehicles sold annually grew, Volkswagen AG decided to expand its operations in Russia even further, building its own plant in the country. At the moment, the Kaluga plant’s annual production amounts 160,000 vehicles under Škoda (Škoda Fabia and Octavia) and Volkswagen (Volkswagen Polo sedan and Tiguan) brands.
Volkswagen Group Rus boasts an extensive dealer network that allows sales and service all over Russia, with over 360 dealers in a vast number of Russian regions from Kaliningrad to Vladivostok. The company also plans to expand its activities in Russia by building an engine plant in Kaluga.
Volkswagen Group Rus sold 229,000 vehicles in 2011, which represents a market share of 8,8% in Russia’s passenger vehicle segment
