SEWS to Lay Off 950 at Leszno Plant by Mid-2011

TOKYO, Japan - Japan’s Sumitomo Electric Wiring Systems, Inc. (SEWS), a manufacturer of electric wiring systems for the automotive industry, plans to terminate production at its plant in Leszno, western Poland, where it will lay off 950 of its 1,000 workers, leaving only the technical support department open. The layoffs will start in March and be completed by the end of June.

Established in 1995, the Leszno factory supplies wire harnesses primarily Toyota. Its production will be relocated to Romania, as it happened with SEWS’ Rawicz facility, its other Polish unit, which was closed down on October 2009.
