GM’s Hungarian Powertrain Unit Changes Name

On May 19th, General Motors Powertrain Hungary Kft. officially changed its name to Opel Szentgottárd Kft. GM’s Hungarian powertrain unit has been building engines and precision machined engine parts since 1991. It currently produces 1.6 and 1.8 litre petrol engines for Opel plants across Europe, and serves also as an important production hub of cylinder heads.

The company has recently launched construction of a new 30,000 square metre production hall at its Szentgotthárt site, which is part of its €500 million expansion program it announced last September. The investment will double shop floor capacity of the existing plant and its annually capacity to 500 thousand engines, making the Szentgotthárd plant one of its largest in the world. The production of three new 3 and 4-cylinder small displacement engines is expected to begin in late 2012. The expansion will create 700 to 800 additional jobs at the site.

GM’s Hungarian unit produced some 220,000 engines and 270,000 cylinder heads last year.
