GM Powertrain Uzbekistan CJSC, the joint venture between General Motors Corp. and SC UzAvtosanoat, will inaugurate its new engine manufacturing plant in the Zangiota district of Tashkent region in November. The plant, which has a projected annual capacity of 225,000 units, is scheduled to launch mass production of GM’s 1.2 (85hp) and 1.5 litre (115hp) petrol engines on November 11th. The 44.7 thousand square meter factory is located on a 40ha site. Total investment in the project amounted to $521.8 million (approx. €365 million).
GM Powertrain Uzbekistan CJSC was established by Uzavtoprom jointly with General Motors in December 2008. GM owns 52% of the shares, Uzavtoprom 48%. Its main custumer will be GM Uzbekistan (Asaka, Andijan region), but engines will also be exported to other GM sites as well. By launching the local engine plant, localisation rate of GM Uzbekistan-built vehicle will exceed 80%.
The plant's equipment has been installed and the first engines have been assembled for test purposes
